What is an elevator pitch?

An elevator pitch is a short speech which promotes an idea, product, service or project. An elevator pitch is usually around 20-30 seconds long. An elevator pitch follows a certain structure:

[NAME PRODUCT] is used by [CUSTOMER SEGMENT] who want to [WHAT YOUR CUSTOMER WANTS].

It’s a [TYPE PRODUCT OR SERVICE] which helps the customer to [BENEFIT #1] and [BENEFIT #2].

In contrary to [COMPETITOR’S SOLUTION] our product is [EXPLAIN DIFFERENCE].

Why is it called an elevator pitch?

The reason why an elevator pitch is called an elevator pitch, is because of the limited length. The idea is, that you should be able to do your pitch in the time that you spend with (f.e. your boss) when you are in the elevator. Since you usually don’t spend more than 20-30 seconds in an elevator, this is why it’s called an elevator pitch.
